Hollywood & the Best of Los Angeles Alive (Alive Series)
Published in Unknown Binding by Hunter Publishing (April, 2003)
Authors: Robert White and Phyllis White
Average review score:

An insiders look at Hollywood
The great thing about this book is that it was written by people with an inside view of "The business". Along with the most complete look at Tinsletown they add anecdotes and little known facts that make just reading the book fun.
And this book covers more that downtown, Hollywood and Beverly Hills. It travels north to Santa Barbara and south to Long Beach and Catalina.
If you're headed for LA this is the book to get. Even as a died-in-the-wool Angeleno, I found this book informative, usefull and fun to read.

Terrific book
Here's a 600-page book that's filled to its movie brim, with tons of offbeat things to see and do; bright and breezy in its writing, you'll find facts and other nifty news here about this incredible place called LA and Hollywood that, even if you've lived here all your life (!), you probably never knew existed.

Excellent
As in all Hunter Guides, this hefty paperback is chock full of information - restaurants and hotels, shopping, daytime and nightime activities, even where to see the stars.

Home Bodybuilding: Three Easy Steps to Building Your Body and Changing Your Life
Published in Paperback by Adams Media Corporation (April, 2002)
Author: Robert, Ph.D. Wolff
Average review score:

It is possible to create a great body at home
I almost quit working out (again) if it weren't for Home Bodybuilding. I have two kids, a full-time job and no time for a gym and I needed to find something that would help me keep in shape. I'm so happy that I found this book.

The book has five parts and they are:
Part I--Getting Started
Part II--Nutrition
Part III--The Basics
Part IV--Body Specific
Part V--The Mind

It is also broken down into giving workouts and advice for women and men (a good thing since I have no desire to have big muscles) and it has lots of good workouts and exercises you can do at home or in the gym.

It seems to cover all the basics by featuring exercises and workouts you can do with barbells, dumbbells, machines, no weights and exercises with just your body and even using infomercial equipment.

Yeah, I admit it. I bought the Total Gym a year ago and after a few months of using it (it now sits in the garage, thank you) it's more like the Total Joke, but that's a whole different review.

Anyway, this book has been really helpful and if anyone is looking for a no non-sense way to get themselves in good shape and do it at home, this is the book I'd recommend.

the best book for working out at home
I was looking for a book that was geared for people who want to work out at home and couldn't find anything until I found Home Bodybuilding. The format is based on three steps which are the mental, physical and nutritional. The book also has separate sections for men and women as well as exercises with weights, without weights and even infomercial equipment. I liked the author's straight forward approach which doesn't have any agendas like other books I've read (i.e. like Body For Life which the author of the book is also the founder of the supplement company EAS which is promoted in his book) and he provides lots of good information which works. He is also very motivational and the book is filled with inspiring observations, quotes and affirmations which are helpful. The last part of the book is devoted to the mental aspect of being successful working out at home and while being a bit apprehensive about it at first, I'm a believer now. All in all, a well done book I'd whole heartedly say "get".

Like this book a lot
Home Bodybuilding is simply excellent. I had no time for a gym or personal trainer and I didn't want to buy lots of exercise equipment for the home if I wouldn't use it, so I bought Home Bodybuilding because it had lots of exercise I could do without going to a gym or having equipment. That is one of the things that attracted me to the book was that the author was saying "You can can great excellent results without a gym" and that was what I wanted.

After weeks of following the Home Bodybuilding three step program, my body has changed in a great way. I've lost 15 pounds of "fat" and gained strength all over my body. The thing I really like is how much better my body looks. Before it was flabby and I did not have much energy and now I have more energy and my body (especially under my arms) doesn't jiggle around anymore. I can't wait to see how I look and feel in the next four weeks! This is the book to get!

Igniting the Soul at Work: A Mandate for Mystics
Published in Paperback by Hampton Roads Pub Co (November, 2002)
Author: Robert Rabbin

Igniting the Soul at Work: A Mandate for Mystics
I've been reading Robert's books for many years now. His insight and his passion never cease to amaze me. He writes what we all feel, and he writes from such a deep and honest place that it can only help us to clarify the truth in ourselves as well as the world around us. I truly believe this is a book that the corporate world needs to read, needs to set its standards by. Our lives are so precious and Robert helps us to realize how we can live our lives authentically, spiritually, with humor, and how all of this can transpire in the work place. The stories he shares of his own experiences enlighten us all. His words make me WANT to be better, to live my live in truth. I think this is a book for everyone who wants to live their life in the light of love, passion and truth.

Must Read!!
This book is a must-read for anyone who feels this country's corporate and political leadership is lacking in vision, awareness, conscience and accountability. With clarity and depth, and pulling no punches, Robert puts into words what so many of us feel but cannot adequately express - we need a new breed of leaders who can take the world into peace and harmony, not war and chaos. We need transcendent leaders, and it must begin with each one of us. "Igniting the Soul at Work - A Mandate for Mystics" should be required reading for every political and corporate leader throughout this world.

This is Really Who We Are!
What is true leadership? Should we lead from our hearts? From our heads? From our wallets? These are questions that Robert Rabbin addresses with courage and insight in his latest book. And he shows us that without a deep sense of who we really are, these questions are hard to figure out. This is the starting point for Igniting the Soul at Work: A Mandate for Mystics. "Mystic" doesn't mean supernatural or freaky, but rather it accurately connotes that we all have a source of inspiration that comes to us quite naturally, if we let it. We all have mystical ability, and Rabbin shows us that when we realize this, it makes sense to expect our leaders to demonstrate this strength as well.

Good Reference
It is a good book, used as the requred text for the graduate soil mechanics class at UC Berkeley. I learned a lot from it. There are also other good references there, e.g. Soil Mechanics and Foundations by Muni Budhu.

If there were 6 stars to give...I would
As a Geotechnical engineer in a graduate program I can honestly say that this is my most frequently consulted reference.
More accessible and practical than Mitchell, or Taylor, (though not as theoretical or fundamental).

Holtz & Kovacs is a clear step above Das, Coduto, or Huang in scholarship.

This is a book that you keep for your engineering career.

Best book for understanding
However you still need Braja M. Das for your PE Exam

How to Dotcom

A Great Skim
Before sitting down to write this review we realized a snack would be nice, so after a creamy skim yogurt and a cold drink, we were ready to dive in. What has this got to do with Robert McGarvey's book How to Dotcom? Everything-because that skim yogurt was exactly what this book was like.

McGarvey's slightly filling low-calorie read begins, flows and ends logically. He covers all the expected aspects of "dotcomming" with little waylaying, getting right to the fruit on the bottom. It is not unreasonable to expect to get this book, get the point, and get on your way to a website in a matter of hours. But if you are looking for in depth internet discussion and information, it will not be found under the lid of this book, which, quite frankly, was okay with us.

A few points were particularly appreciated. The design was quite excellent, highlighting the important information in sassy side quotes, and the "how to" chapters were broken up with "how we did" chapters, neatly preventing information overload and inspiring action to follow in the profiled entrepreneur's footsteps. If we were to bestow one gripe upon this book it would be some of the Cheap Tricks chapters. A few of the segments included achievements of folks who had certainly not taken the cheap route; in fact, one entrepreneur had used $75,000 to start up his fledging business. Folks who stayed in the range of $500 to $1,000 all-inclusive would have been more like it.

Get this book. Whether your budget is $100 or $100,000 you will not be remiss in helping your bottom line with this tasty and appealing piece of the dotcom pie.

A Great Choice for e-Business Beginners!
If Bob McGarvey's name seems familiar to you, it's probably because you've seen his work in one of the many of the top-tier business magazines for which he writes, including SELLING POWER and ENTREPRENEUR. In fact, he's one the savviest, most knowledable writers around on the subjects of sales, marketing, and technology.

There are lots of reasons why "How to Dotcom" belongs on your bookshelf, but let me just touch on the two most important: First, McGarvey knows what he's talking about. He is a meticulous researcher who works a little harder and digs a little deeper than other writers covering similar topics. The second reason you ought to buy this book is that it's well written. Believe me, writing about technology in a way that is engaging and entertaining is no small achievement. And even the best content is of limited value if you can't work you way through the book. McGarvey's writing style hits exactly the right tone...not too breezy but certainly not too ponderous.

Bottom line: If you find the idea of e-business tempting but you're not sure how to get started, you will not go wrong if you begin your research with "How to Dotcom."

Covers everything from shopping bots to registering a domain
Robert McGarvey's How To Dotcom: A Step-By-Step Guide To E-Commerce is a complete instructional course covering ever aspect of doing business on the Internet. i have to go!
I think "I have to go" is a good book and a lot of kids could probably relate to it when they were little. It is a good book for kids and a funny one. My reading buddie is in kindergartenand he loved the book!I like it when he says "i have to go pee, and grandpa, do you have t go pee, well so do I!"I like it when robert munsch ... tells the stories. He says it with a lot of excitement and enjoyment. He is a good role model for kids and adults, and a great story teller. I would recomend this book to parents with their 1st child so they know what to expect!

A family favorite!!
This was the first of the many Robert Munsch books I have given my grandchildren. It remains our favorite of all! Children love humor about things they think are a bit taboo (don't we all?) and this delightful and very true to life story never fails to bring gales of laughter to both the girls and me. My personal favorite line is from grandma. "I never had this problem with my children."

For adults it really brings back memories of those time consuming snowsuit dressing days, potty stops in the middle of nowhere, and so much more!

Potty training isn't a crisis and it certainly isn't a scandal. Robert Munsch shows us it's ok to lighten up and laugh about real life!

A Potty Training Success Story!!
A wonderful, humorous way to present a subject which is much talked about but remains to be one of life's mysteries. How does one go about potty training? Our seven year old child with special needs became potty trained after I purchased this book(as recommended by a friend). We were able to share the humor of the story and relate it to our situation. It brings a smile every time its read!!

If It's Going to Be It's Up to Me
Published in Audio Cassette by HarperAudio (April, 1997)
Author: Robert H. Schuller
Average review score:

Dr. Schuller is tremendous
Everybody has things that they consider problems and setbacks, at work and in life. Dr. Schuller's encounters and experiences shed perspective on us that many setbacks are bigger than our own but they can all be overcome. It just depends on YOU. After months of frustration at work, culminating in losing a promotion to a man with equal experience but less "tenure", I was getting very discouraged in general, and disappointed with other "self-improvement books" I was reading, to gain insight on what I am doing wrong, and how to fix it. Books like "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie get rave reviews, but in comparison to Schuller, Carnegie's work is miles off the mark. Unlike Carnegie and many others, everything Dr. Schuller explains is completely ethical and allows you to live your life with dignity. I have never been a real spiritual person, but Dr. Schuller is helping to change that. Using faith and spirituality as your guide seems to be much more effective and self-affirming than shameless groveling. In short, this book tells you how to set goals and keep them. How to take lemons and make lemonade. Great for its informational value as well as its entertainment value. Reading it may not exactly change your life, nor does it claim to, but it will definitely change whatever negative thinking you might have.

Mind Rules!
Setting up goals in life is a step to optimistic accomplishment. If it's going to be me, its upto me to make the 'Decisions' firm and keep them final to achieve what we want. Realising own strengths with a positive 'I can do it' is in itself an initial step towards reaching heights. Robert Schuller's books are gems of inspirations and this one is just the 'Attitude' - shrugg off the black seeds of inferiority complexes and come out to accept the changes with vital energy and think positive. All his 'Better Yourself' serious is marvellous collections. It's the inner fire to flicker flame and positively pace ahead to be real 'Ownself', know the potentialities and think with mind rathar than use the heart. Rob's has a unique style of setting examples, adding the spiritual zest of bible stories but the main purpose stands for personal improvement and managing self to be better and best. Positive attitude pays dividends when you break free to grasp all that you dream. Whatever the faith be, Rob's book has the inspirational motivation to push forth the reader to smooth sail in life. Set goals, set priorities, think positive and achieve success with commitment to fulfil the desires - just decide upon today and think 'If it's going to be me, it's up to me and nothing can stop you from looking ahead as you leave those trails behind. That's a master piece 'Dr.Robert Schuller' - A spritual and Mind trainer, I would say! A good reading 'Hour of power' to read and self improve.

A Book for Anyone!
This was the second book of Dr.Schullers that I had read. I came to his ministry in 1997. When I read this book, it changed my way of thinking and my faith in Christ and my belief about myself. This was one of the most powerfull books I have ever read. It greatly influenced me. In this book, Dr.Schuller talks about how to live succesfully as a christian through the 8 proven principals of possibility thinking that he has learned and lived through. It's a self help book through moativation by Jesus Christ. Anyone who knows Dr.Schuller and his ministry knows where he is coming from. Anyone who isnt famliar with him, I encourage you to pick up the book and read it. I also encourage young people to read this book. If I would have had this when I was younger, I would have been more determined and optimistic and stronger about myself. At least I have read it now. It's well worth buying. Thank God for Dr.Schuller!

Index of Suspicion
Published in Paperback by Writers Showcase Press (December, 2001)
Author: Robert E. Armstrong
Average review score:

Politics, smuggling, and veterinary medicine all meet
Dr. Robert Armstrong is a retired veterinarian, and held the post of animal control officer for the health department in Houston, Texas for ten years. He also served in the Air Force veterinary corps and for three years served as director of medical readiness for the Air Force's European Command. He was based in Southeast Asia and Germany, working with military dogs.

In his follow up to CANIS, his first mystery featuring Dr. Duncan MacDonell, politics, smuggling, and veterinary medicine all meet in a political conspiracy that involves death of a political candidate by what appears to be a rabid cat. Duncan MacDonell happens to be attending a Republican $500 per plate fundraiser for their candidate, Patrick Sawyer. When Sawyer gets into his limo to leave the party, he is viciously attacked by a cat. MacDonell is on the scene, and immediately orders rabies testing done on the offending feline:

"MacDonell scratched his chin. After mulling it over all night he expected the worst, and now he couldn't believe what he had just heard. 'Tell you what,' he said after some reflection, 'run it again and ship a chunk of the hippocampus up to Austin on Monday for mouse inoculation, just to be on the safe side.' 'Run it again?' Aaron whined. 'Run it again,' MacDonell repeated. 'Negative is negative, Doc,' Aaron said. He sounded sober. 'I'm not questioning your result, Johnny.' 'Sounds like it to me. And we usually only do mice if we suspect a false positive.' 'This isn't a usual situation, John. I saw the cat. It was flaming.'"

Armstrong's MacDonell is up against the usual bureaucracy when the candidate dies of rabies, who are only interested in covering their arses instead of getting to the bottom of the conspiracy. Mac is an instantly likeable character, with flaws and brilliance, happily working alongside a wife who is as much of a whiz with a pistol as she is in the kitchen. Set in Houston, Texas, MacDonell shows the reader what life is like in Texas, from the politics to the cooking. In Texas time, politics is gaining political correctness as MacDonell fights for justice against some rich and vindictive opponents. This is an intense and suspense-laden read.

An Entertaining Read
I met and quickly warmed up to Dr. Duncan MacDonell in CANIS. Now he returns in a story about rabid cats. A politician is attacked by a cat and although tests on the animal are negative, the governor still dies of rabies. Was it an unfortunate accident or was the governor murdered? City politics and budget problems continue to plague MacDonell. To complicate matters further, the FBI suspects foul play by MacDonell or someone on his staff. INDEX OF SUSPICION is a well-written, intriguing mystery. The characters are believable and dialogue sizzles. But you get more than just an entertaining read. As in CANIS, Bob Armstrong's expertise shines through. He continues to educate his readers, this time on rabies and how it can be contracted (you don't have to be bitten by a rabid animal), as well as life in the trenches at an Animal Control Center. This was an excellent follow-up in a great series.

Robert Armstrong has written his second gripping thriller.
Dr. Duncan MacDonell, a Veterinarian, finds himself smack dab in the middle of another mystery. When a man is literally shredded in his car by a psycho cat, Dr. MacDonell is there to save his life and get the animal

out of the car. What at first just seems a bizarre incident, quickly escalates into political intrigue. Because it wasn't just any man that was being slashed by a raving cat. It was the Governor.

Who could be behind such an atrocious attack? What kind of monster could

set something like this up? The plot gets thicker and the suspects are out in droves. I couldn't figure this one out till the end and every exciting page kept me up late at night in anticipation.

Robert Armstrong has written his second gripping thriller. I was excited

to see that he continued with the same main characters from Canis and stepped up the intrigue in INDEX OF SUSPICION. I really enjoy his way with dialogue and the life experiences he must draw upon to give the reader a

sense of the atrocities that some animals have to endure during their short lives. I truly enjoyed INDEX OF SUSPICION for it's great writing, excellent information and exciting storyline!

India Unveiled

Author: Robert Arnett
Average review score:

Insightful
This book has won a number of awards including the best armchair traveler book of the year award. It stands out from the league of similar books and comes straight from the author's heart. Rightly acclaimed as one of the most insightful and revealing books about the country, it emphasizes diverse religious traditions and spirituality of India. This honest book easily impresses the reader with captivating vivid narrative peppered with delightful pictures. Organized by six broad regions, it is not meant to be a tome on India but a catalyst that propels the readers towards discovering it. It evokes nostalgic heartwarming feeling for those who have been to India and generates genuine interest among the would-be tourists. Though no one can claim to have captured the vastness, diversity and contradictions of Indian culture in one book, this fascinating volume comes pretty close. In the latest edition of the book, author has updated the text and pictures and done away with some redundant text. A must buy for anyone traveling to India or just having interest in it- Indians and non-Indians alike (This review has been taken from Recipedelights.com)

Supurbly written by an outsider looking in
Actually, I just found this book reviewed in India by a major news paper with a great recomendation. I just received it myself and have fallen in love. Written by someone who seems to have really taken time to study his subject. Excellent text and photos.

Heartwarming, captures the essence
This book must be read by anybody who has an interest in India, whether they are Indians or non-Indians. I recommend that anybody who plans on visiting India also read this book. The typical tourist book gives practical information on what to see and where to stay and what to wear. But it won't give you an insight into the land, its people and its culture. And if you do not get that, you haven't got the most from your trip. This book will prepare you for the discovery of India. The photographs are marvellous, a visual delight.

Jacques the Fatalist and His Master
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (January, 1979)
Authors: Denis Diderot and J. Robert Loy
Average review score:

An interactive literary device
Two centuries or so before "modern" writers began writing experimental novels, Denis Diderot, the force behind the Encyclopaedia effort, wrote this strange and indeed very "modern" novel in which the author leads a conversation with the reader, asking him where he (or she, of course) would want to go and what to do with the characters and the story. Here we see the author in the very process of creation, exposing his doubts, exploring his options, and playing with the story.

There is really no plot as such. Jacques, a man who seems to believe everything that happens is already written "up on high", but who nonetheless keeps making decisions for himself, is riding through France with his unnamed master, a man who is skeptic of Jacques's determinism but who remains rather passive throughout the book. Fate and the creator-author will put repeatedly to test Jacques's theory, through a series of more or less fortunate accidents and situations, as well as by way of numerous asides in the form of subplots or stories.

The novel is totally disjointed and these asides and subplots blurb all over the place, always interrupted themselves by other happenings. The most interesting of them is the story of Madame de Pommeroy and her bitter but ultimately ineffectual revenge on her ex-lover.

Diderot confesses to having taken much from Sterne's "Tristram Shandy" and Cervantes's "Don Quixote". This last novel's influence seems obvious at two levels: Cervantes also talks to the reader, especially in Part Two, and also reflects abundantly on the creative process. Moreover, the tone and environment of the book is very similar to the Quixote: two people engaged in an endless philosophical conversations while roaming around the countryside and facing several adventures which serve to illustrate one or antoher point of view.

Diderot's humour is bawdy and practical and the book is fun to read. The exact philosophical point is not clearcut, but it will leave the reader wondering about Destiny, Fate, and Free Will.

Buried Treasure
Yeah. Believe all the reviews below. This book really is amazing. It would feel like it was written yesterday, if it was more derivative -- but it's fresh! The language is incisive, no waste, and the pacing and structure are brilliantly fluid. It's smart and funny, too, and completely unpredictable, filled with weird offhand bursts of bewildering narrativity. And yet balanced, apparently sane. I truly enjoyed reading it. It's great.

Burning Read
This book is amazing. It will make many of your conceptions of where things belong in the history of the novel fall apart. Not coincidentally, that is one of the points of this book, being an exercise more than a message: that all apparent armatures of order are one more perspective away from disintegration. This book is really quite sneaky as well. In the beginning, the constant references to the inscriptive certainties in the heavens seem silly. But then little explanations come along (like the geneology of Jacques' crazy horse), and the novel heads down a dark, yet very enchanting road, into a fuzz that's every bit as modern as any you've read. This thing alternately looks like Bunuel, Zola, Stendhal, Faulkner, Kerouac. The picaresque, the uncertain narrator, the structuralists, all seem to be swimming around in this amazing book.

Surely many writers and artists from this era (like Goya) depicted the nobles as effete and incapable of carrying out the governance of the most basic requirements of existence, but here, they also appear (in the image of the 'master') as so withdrawn from the world as to be blind. If you take away all the stories that are told, the only thing that's left of a plot here is the master having his horse stolen right from under his nose while Jacques was gone and then Jacques finding it for him at the end in a beautiful, mock sort of deus ex machina.
